FACT SHEET · UPDATED NOVEMBER 3, 2026
Autism and special education statistics for Florida families.
A practical, carefully sourced reference for families, educators, writers, and community partners looking for a clear picture of autism and special education data in Florida and across the United States.
This page shares reported figures, not predictions about any individual child. Each statistic links to its original source and date.
AT A GLANCE
The numbers behind the need for understanding.
Families deserve information that is specific enough to be useful and careful enough to trust. These figures help describe the wider context around autism identification and special education services. They do not replace an individual evaluation, school plan, or conversation with a qualified professional.
011 in 31
children aged 8 in the CDC monitoring communities were identified with autism in 2022.
That is 3.2%, based on records reviewed across 16 U.S. communities. This is a monitoring estimate, not a count of every child in the country.

the identified autism prevalence among boys compared with girls in the CDC's 2022 monitoring data.
The report found 49.2 per 1,000 boys and 14.3 per 1,000 girls among 8-year-old children in the participating communities.

Florida students with disabilities were reported in the autism category in the 2023–24 school year.
The Florida Department of Education's final Survey 2 report lists autism as 14% of the state's 441,112 students with disabilities.
Florida Department of Education, Spring 2024 ↗ 047.5 million
U.S. students ages 3–21 received special education and related services under IDEA in 2022–23.
That was 15% of public school enrollment. IDEA data describe students receiving eligible services, not all children with a disability.
National Center for Education Statistics, 2024 ↗ 0513%
of students served under IDEA were reported in the autism category in 2022–23.
Autism was one of the four largest reported disability categories among students receiving IDEA services that school year.
National Center for Education Statistics, 2024 ↗ HOW TO READ THESE FIGURES
Useful context, without turning children into numbers.
Autism identification and special education reporting answer different questions. The CDC monitoring estimate looks at identified autism among children in participating communities. Florida and national education figures count students receiving eligible services within education reporting categories.
That difference matters. A reported prevalence estimate is not an enrollment count, and an education category is not a complete picture of a child’s strengths, needs, or support plan. The most helpful next step for a family is always a conversation about their own child.
